The Final Conference of the Interreg EURO-MED FRED Project was successfully held on 18–19 June 2026 on Lošinj Island, jointly organised by the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Maritime Studies, the project’s Lead Partner, and the project partner Public fire brigade of the Town of Mali Lošinj.
The conference brought together project partners, representatives of public institutions, fire and rescue services, experts in nature conservation, forest management, civil protection, and local authorities to present the project’s achievements and exchange the knowledge and experience gained throughout its implementation.
During the two-day event, participants were introduced to the project’s key outcomes, with a particular focus on innovative tools and methodologies for wildfire prevention and risk mitigation. The conference showcased the capabilities of the FRED digital platform, designed to support operational decision-making and wildfire scenario simulations, as well as the results of pilot activities implemented across the project’s pilot areas.
A highlight of the programme was the panel discussion, “Beyond the Project: Lessons Learnt from FRED,” where project partners and invited experts reflected on the project’s legacy and discussed how its results can contribute to climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, sustainable forest management, and enhanced resilience of Mediterranean regions.
Participants also took part in a study visit to the Town of Mali Lošinj and a technical excursion to Susak Island, including a live maritime search and rescue demonstration, showcasing the importance of cooperation among emergency services and public authorities in addressing natural hazards.
The Final Conference confirmed the importance of international cooperation, knowledge exchange, and innovative digital solutions in strengthening wildfire prevention and improving the resilience of Mediterranean communities to climate and environmental challenges.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all project partners, speakers, stakeholders, and participants whose commitment, expertise, and collaboration contributed to the successful implementation of the FRED Project and its Final Conference. We look forward to building on the project’s achievements and continuing our joint efforts towards safer, more resilient, and climate-adapted Mediterranean regions.
