What we do
The FRED project tackles the common challenge of adaptation to and mitigation of climate change impacts – very strong wildfire events – by providing a prevention tool – dynamic fire risk maps (based on fuel maps + other data such as anthropogenic impact, phyric history, meteo etc.), by providing a mitigation tool for the unfortunate events when the fires actually do break out, in order to shorten the reaction time (by early warning functionality) and minimize the damage to human life and economy.
The new solution implemented in the FRED project has the ambition to go in that very direction – artificial intelligence to go hand in hand with technical advancement of UAVs in actual field operations.
PROJECT RELEVANCE
The project will provide an applied and holistic approach to developing a forest fire prevention strategy applicable to the entire Euro-Mediterranean region. The change will directly involve six piloting areas in different MED countries: Kras karst area in Slovenia, Rocca di Cerere UNESCO Geopark in Italy, Una National park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ulcinj municipality in Montenegro, Mali Lošinj Island in Croatia and Baixo Alentejo region in Portugal. However, the change will indirectly be a lot greater because in the scope of the FRED project, a strong focus will be put on stakeholders/end-beneficiary networking in all segments of project implementation. Also, the crucial added value of the project and an opportunity is that the developed approach will be tested in multiple areas across the Mediterranean, covering a wide range of vegetation formations and different “firescapes”, which ensures its transferability of the results to all fire-prone environments in the programme area.
